Chris Rhys Howarth

Since a young age I have followed my two passions, running and writing. I ran my first marathon at 19 and have since gone on to compete in marathons worldwide. I have twice run the London marathon and completed the UK’s toughest marathon – the Beachy Head, also twice. In 2004, at 22, I entered my first ultra endurance race - the Jungle Marathon, a 200 KM run through Brazil’s Amazon rainforest. I finished the top British athlete and 14th in the world - widely known as one of the world’s most difficult ultra races. In 2008 I completed one of the world’s four toughest city marathons – Kenya’s Nairobi marathon, and most recently at the end of 2009 I ran Portugal’s Lisbon marathon. I have written plays for London and Newcastle theatres and became a published writer through my contribution to a book on conflict resolution within Israel. My contribution to this book came through working in Israel on a peace and conflict resolution project since 2001. After completing a Masters degree in scriptwriting in 2007 I moved on to my most recent work on the ‘Hear Our Voice Kenya’ performing arts project. Through the project I have written and directed both a fictional film and a documentary film exploring the issues and experiences of street children and revealing true stories behind Kenya’s post election violence in 2007/08.
